So, this blog is old. Life and social media have conspired to reduce my posting frequency to nearly nothing over the last decade. But I want to get it going again, so all the old stuff is reproduced here and I will add more as I can. Favorites that I forgot I even wrote linked below.

Home Protection Kit

Worried about that maximum tonnage of missing Anthrax? DHS threat levels got you down? Not to worry. The good folks at MG Packaging have assembled everything you need, and it’s ready to ship!

Hmmm…

OK, let’s see. There are missile launchers on the streets of Washington, bellicose rumblings from North Korea in response to our assertion that they can reach the west coast of the US with nukes, and we’re at “Threat Condition High”. The troops are massed (over 150,000), and Dubya gave a pep rally, during which he no-doubt uttered the following: “eye-rack” (Iraq), and “nook-you-lur” (nuclear), several times.

Juggy Kitchen

Uhm, I just got home from work and, what with it being friggin’ Saturday and all, I needed some mindless fun. Flipping through the channels, I landed on HGTV’s “Designer’s Challenge”. I enjoy watching this show, mainly because the designers invent new words when they make their presentations.

Friends with balls

Have you seen this show Coupling? Brenda & I happenned across this show on the BBC America network recently, and have now seen several episodes. Why just this very evening we listened to an ass monologue that confirmed our initial reaction to the show: it’s really, really funny.

I’m not the only one

Several of my friends have noted that I tend to complain a lot about my commute. This is true. I think that many of them are wondering when the hell I’m gonna get over it and shut up already, thinking that I’m a big baby and that I should stop complaining. To that I say probably never, yes I am and no I should not.

It’s (not) news to me

I signed up for CNN’s “breaking news” mailing list sometime in October of 2001. At the time, the NSC was issuing “heightened security alerts” for various and sundry “non-specific threats”, and I thought it might be nice to be on the bleeding edge of these warnings. Over time, the usefulness of the NSC alerts wore thin (though I should have given them no thought in the first place), but the events that CNN deemed worthy of a Breaking News Bulletin Email proved to be rather interesting indeed.

The joy of logs

My new web host gives me access to the raw webserver logs for my site. Initially I thought this would be a mild curiosity, but now after just a week of having my site hosted there, the log report is pretty interesting. Since the logs recors things like where people are coming from to visit my site, and what search strings they used to find me (in the case of a search engine redirect), you can see what parts of the site are popular, and more important, what’s on people’s minds.

While I was out

While my site was down, some things happenned.

Powerbook Gushing

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Infoworld (Infoworld, so help me god, Infoworld!) recently posted a glowing review of the new G4 Powerbooks. I’ve been loving mine for a year now, and if I didn’t need AutoCAD and Microsoft Flight Simulator (yes I NEED it), my PC would be outta here. Well, actually it would just have Linux on it.

Enabling Windows printing on OSX, the tip-tip

The macosxhints forum has listed a tip for enabling printing to a windows hosted printer in OSX. In a typical AppleOS move, they hid the option in an Option-click. Option clicking the Add button in Print Manager was supposed to call up an enhanced “advanced” menu, with “Windows printer via SAMBA” as an option. But alas, it wasn’t there when I tried it. But last night I found the tip to make the tip work. Run the following two commands from a terminal window:

Packing Terricloth

Yesterday I got cut off by a guy coming out of the 34th Street subway exit. He was all dressed up in the tough-guy threads of a gang banger—baggy jeans, big Timberland boots, do-rag. He’d be intimidating, but I just got off the 8:13 express from Metropark and had enough attitude to take over the big meet in the Bronx in “The Warriors”. Besides, the dude was carrying a bright red Lord & Taylor’s bag that was loaded with neatly folded purple towels for some reason. He might have been packing heat, but he was also packing terricloth . I stepped on his heels, he shot me a look, but my look said “dude, please; you’re carrying towels”. He understood, faced forward and started hoofing it east on 32nd Street.

Humbled

I think this is why I have a blog. I want a place where I can tell the world about funny, interesting, or strange shit I find scattered around the internet. It also provides an easy forum for my miscelaneous writings, where I can forgo the hassles of an editor. Everything gets published, dammit.

Utah honors the 9-11 victims

Howdy folks, have a look at this. Hard to believe this got no local media attention. This memorial really makes quite an impact. If the link fails to load (as it did for me), try this mirror site . Thanks to Paul Tomblin for making this memorial more acccessible.

Yuppie moment

I am not a yuppie. Again, I am not a yuppie. But I sure looked like one on Saturday. Saturday my wife & I managed to stuff six new dining room chairs, a medium-sized dining room table, a light fixture, a large shelving unit, some window dressings (rag-linen roman blind-type thingys), and a cheese grater into our car. The car is a VW Golf. The furniture was all from Ikea. I was wearing a fleece jacket and a baseball cap emblazoned with a computer software company’s logo on the front (and the website on the back).

Host problems

I’m experiencing major problems with my web host. In fact, if you sent me email yesterday afternoon, you’d better resend it because I never got it. I’m working on changing hosts, and when it’s complete I’ll let you know….
